How to read the South Indian chart, what the dasa periods mean, and exactly how the 10 poruthams are checked on this site.

Reading the South Indian chart

In the South Indian (square) chart the twelve rasis never move. Meenam (Pisces) is the top-left box, and the signs run clockwise: Mesham, Rishabam, Mithunam along the top, Kadagam and Simham down the right, Kanni, Thulam, Viruchigam and Dhanusu along the bottom, and Makaram and Kumbham up the left. The box with the diagonal mark and La / ல is the Lagna (ascendant). Planets are written in the box of the rasi they occupied at birth. A small R / வ marks a retrograde (vakra) planet.

The Rasi chart shows the planets by sign. The Navamsa chart divides every sign into nine parts; astrologers read it for marriage, dharma and the inner strength of each planet.

Lagna, Rasi and Nakshatra

Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the birth moment. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why the birth time matters. Rasi is the sign the Moon occupies, and Nakshatra (star) is one of the 27 lunar mansions, each divided into four padas. Your star decides the dasa sequence and is the basis of marriage matching.

Vimshottari dasa

Life is divided into planetary periods totalling 120 years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years. The first dasa is the lord of your birth star, and the dasa balance depends on how much of the star the Moon had yet to travel at birth. Each mahadasa is split into nine bhuktis in the same order.

The 10 poruthams (marriage matching)

Following Tamil practice, stars are counted from the girl’s star to the boy’s star (both included), and rasis from the girl’s rasi to the boy’s rasi.

The site gives 1 point for a match and half for average. Rajju and Vedhai are treated as decisive: if either fails, the verdict is “not recommended by tradition” whatever the total. Families and astrologers differ on a few of these rules, so treat the score as a first screen and discuss the full charts with your family astrologer.

Doshams

Chevvai (Mars) dosham

Mars in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna or the Moon. It is treated as cancelled when Mars is in its own or exalted sign, or in the classical exception signs for that house (for example the 7th house in Kadagam or Makaram). In matching, tradition prefers both partners to have it or both not to (dosha samyam).

Rahu–Ketu (Naga) dosham

Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th house from the Lagna.

Kala Sarpa yoga

All seven planets from the Sun to Saturn lie on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis.

Saturn and Jupiter transits (Gochara)

Transits are counted from your Moon sign. Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd is Ezharai Sani (about seven and a half years); the 8th is Ashtama Sani, the 4th Ardhashtama Sani and the 7th Kandaka Sani. Jupiter is considered supportive in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the Moon.

Tamil calendar and nazhigai

The Tamil month begins when the Sun enters a new rasi. If that happens before sunset, the month starts that day; otherwise the next day. The Tamil day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so a birth before sunrise belongs to the previous day. Janma nazhigai is the time from sunrise to birth in nazhigai (24 minutes) and vinadi (24 seconds).

How the calculations are done

Positions are calculated in your browser with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, whole-sign houses and the modern Thirukanitha method. They agree with Swiss Ephemeris — the engine behind professional astrology software — to within seconds of arc. Temple Vakya panchangams use older formulas and can differ slightly, especially for a star near its boundary.

ராசிக் கட்டம் கிரகங்களின் ராசியைக் காட்டுகிறது. நவாம்சம் ஒவ்வொரு ராசியையும் ஒன்பது பகுதிகளாகப் பிரிக்கிறது; திருமணம், தர்மம், கிரகங்களின் உள் பலம் ஆகியவற்றுக்கு இது பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

லக்னம், ராசி, நட்சத்திரம்

லக்னம் — பிறந்த நேரத்தில் கிழக்கில் உதயமாகும் ராசி; சுமார் இரண்டு மணி நேரத்திற்கு ஒருமுறை மாறும், அதனால் பிறந்த நேரம் முக்கியம். ராசி — சந்திரன் இருக்கும் ராசி. நட்சத்திரம் — 27 நட்சத்திரங்களில் ஒன்று, ஒவ்வொன்றும் நான்கு பாதங்கள். தசை வரிசையும் திருமணப் பொருத்தமும் நட்சத்திரத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டவை.

மொத்தம் 120 ஆண்டுகள்: கேது 7, சுக்கிரன் 20, சூரியன் 6, சந்திரன் 10, செவ்வாய் 7, ராகு 18, குரு 16, சனி 19, புதன் 17. ஜன்ம நட்சத்திர அதிபதியின் தசையில் வாழ்க்கை தொடங்குகிறது; பிறக்கும் போது சந்திரன் அந்த நட்சத்திரத்தில் இன்னும் கடக்க வேண்டிய அளவைப் பொறுத்து தசா இருப்பு அமைகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு மகா தசையும் அதே வரிசையில் ஒன்பது புக்திகளாக பிரிகிறது.

பொருத்தம் உள்ளதற்கு 1, மத்திமத்திற்கு ½ மதிப்பெண். ரஜ்ஜு, வேதை இரண்டும் தீர்மானிக்கும் பொருத்தங்கள் — இவற்றில் ஒன்று இல்லையென்றால் மொத்த மதிப்பெண் எதுவானாலும் “மரபுப்படி பரிந்துரைக்கப்படவில்லை”. சில விதிகளில் ஜோதிடர்களிடையே வேறுபாடு உண்டு; மதிப்பெண்ணை முதல் கட்டப் பார்வையாக எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, முழு ஜாதகத்தை குடும்ப ஜோதிடரிடம் பார்க்கவும்.

செவ்வாய் தோஷம்

லக்னம் அல்லது சந்திரனிலிருந்து 2, 4, 7, 8, 12-ஆம் வீடுகளில் செவ்வாய். செவ்வாய் ஆட்சி/உச்சம் பெற்றாலோ, அந்த வீட்டிற்கான விதிவிலக்கு ராசியில் இருந்தாலோ (உ.தா. 7-ஆம் வீடு கடகம் அல்லது மகரம்) நிவர்த்தி. பொருத்தத்தில் இருவருக்கும் இருப்பதோ, இருவருக்கும் இல்லாததோ (தோஷ சாம்யம்) நல்லது.

ராகு–கேது (நாக) தோஷம்

லக்னத்திலிருந்து 1, 2, 7, 8-ல் ராகு அல்லது கேது.

கால சர்ப்ப யோகம்

சூரியன் முதல் சனி வரை ஏழு கிரகங்களும் ராகு–கேது அச்சின் ஒரே பக்கம்.

சனி, குரு கோசாரம்

கோசாரம் ஜன்ம ராசியிலிருந்து கணக்கிடப்படுகிறது. சனி 12, 1, 2-ல் ஏழரைச் சனி; 8-ல் அஷ்டமச் சனி; 4-ல் அர்த்தாஷ்டமச் சனி; 7-ல் கண்டகச் சனி. குரு ராசிக்கு 2, 5, 7, 9, 11-ல் சாதகம்.

தமிழ் நாட்காட்டி, நாழிகை

சூரியன் புதிய ராசியில் நுழையும் போது தமிழ் மாதம் பிறக்கிறது. அது சூரிய அஸ்தமனத்திற்கு முன் நடந்தால் அன்றே மாதம் தொடக்கம்; இல்லையெனில் மறுநாள். தமிழ் நாள் சூரிய உதயம் முதல் மறு உதயம் வரை — உதயத்திற்கு முன் பிறந்தால் முந்தைய நாள். ஜனன நாழிகை — சூரிய உதயத்திலிருந்து பிறப்பு வரையிலான நேரம் (1 நாழிகை = 24 நிமிடம், 1 விநாடி = 24 வினாடி).

கணிப்பு முறை

லஹிரி (சித்திரபக்ஷ) அயனாம்சம், ராசி வீட்டு முறை, திருக்கணித முறையில் உங்கள் உலாவியிலேயே கணிக்கப்படுகிறது. தொழில்முறை ஜோதிட மென்பொருள்களின் அடிப்படையான Swiss Ephemeris-உடன் சில வினாடி-பாகை அளவுக்குள் ஒத்துப்போகிறது. கோயில்களில் பயன்படும் வாக்கிய பஞ்சாங்கம் பழைய சூத்திரங்களைப் பயன்படுத்துவதால், நட்சத்திர எல்லையில் சிறு வேறுபாடு வரலாம்.
